Robert Aguallo, Jr. Joins SCERS Board
SCERS welcomes the appointment of Robert Aguallo, Jr. to the SCERS Board, who will be sworn in at the August 17th meeting.
Nomination Period for Board Seats Closes Aug. 5
Nominations to fill three Retirement Board seats began in July for one Miscellaneous Representative, one Retiree Representative, and one Alternate Retiree Representative. The filing deadline is Aug. 5 at 5 p.m.
Alameda-Related Refund Mailings Require Address Updates
SCERS is finalizing its analysis of compensation and pay records and is preparing to issue refunds of overpaid contributions in the coming months in accordance with the Alameda decision. Before mailings go out, SCERS is asking for address updates.
Ronald Suter Returns to the SCERS Board
SCERS welcomes the appointment of former Regional Parks director Ronald Suter to the SCERS Board, on which he previously served as an elected trustee from 1994 to 2006.
Change Coming to Post-Retirement Employment Limits
California state rules restricting post-retirement employment (i.e. 960-hour limit and 180-day sit-out period) are back in effect April 1, 2022.

At the February 16, 2022 Board of Retirement meeting, the SCERS

SCERS Nears Fully-Funded Status

Alameda Corrections Update
The correction process to comply with the California Supreme Court decision in the case of Alameda County Deputy Sheriffs’ Association et al. v. Alameda County Employees’ Retirement Association and Board of Retirement of ACERA (Alameda) is still underway.
Turnaround Time Improves for First Retirement Check
SCERS has made significant improvements in delivering a better experience for members. Among these improvements is a steady decrease in wait times for retirees’ first checks, from 75 days earlier this summer to the current median time of less than 60 days.
SCERS Office Visitors Must Use Alley Entrance and Sign In
SCERS’ office building (Park Tower) at 980 9th Street has implemented new security protocols. All visitors are now required to sign in at the security desk in the lobby and will be asked to identify what floor and tenant they will be visiting. (SCERS is located on the 19th floor.)

SCERS Board Election Ballots Mailed the Week of 9/13
Ballots for the election of one Miscellaneous, one Safety, and one Alternate Safety seat on the SCERS Board will be mailed the week of Sept. 13 for the voting period that will run from Sept. 20–Oct. 1.
Retired Annuitant Limits Remain Suspended
On August 16, 2021, the Governor issued Executive Order N-12-21, reinstating the emergency waivers regarding post-retirement employment limits for public employees under Government Code section 7522.56.

Nominations will be held for one Miscellaneous Representative, one Safety Representative, and one Alternate Safety Representative. The first day to obtain and file nomination papers and the Candidate’s Statement Form is Monday, July 26, 2021.
