Recent news has alerted the public to a major hacking incident affecting a death-audit service provider for pension systems such as CalPERS and CalSTRS.

This data breach has not affected SCERS members.

The cyberattack, which occurred in late May and affected numerous major organizations around the world, exploited a vulnerability in software used by PBI Research Services/Berwyn Group, known as PBI. Death-audit service providers like PBI monitor retiree lists for unreported deaths to ensure benefits are not overpaid.

Although SCERS uses death-audit services through Berwyn, which merged with PBI this year, SCERS member data has not been compromised by this cyberattack.
